Mindfulness is about bringing our focus to the present moment without judgment, observing our sensations, feelings, and thoughts without becoming entangled in them. Through mindfulness, we cultivate the ability to respond intentionally and with compassion to life's experiences, avoiding impulsive reactions driven by habit.
One of the remarkable aspects of mindfulness is its accessibility. It requires no cost, equipment, or specific location; it can be practiced anywhere and at any time. Whether it's during our morning routine, before sleep, while eating, or even while working, mindfulness can be seamlessly integrated into our busy lives. By doing so, we develop a heightened awareness of our body, thoughts, and surroundings. This practice nurtures self-awareness and self-compassion, which are vital components of overall well-being.
~ ABOUT BREATHING ~
Breathing plays a significant role in mindfulness practice, and understanding its impact is essential. The brain regulates our breathing to meet the body's oxygen needs, and during stressful situations, involuntary breathing can be affected. Stress and anxiety often lead to shallow or irregular breathing, resulting in chest tightness. When this occurs, the body interprets it as a signal of danger, keeping the stress response active.
On the other hand, when we consciously engage in slow and regular breathing, our nervous system shifts from the sympathetic state (our fight or flight response) to the parasympathetic state, allowing the body to rest, reset, and heal. By focusing on our breath, the brain recognizes that there's no immediate threat, and we can relax in safety.
Conscious breathing serves as a potent tool to reduce stress levels, connect with our inner selves, and improve overall health and happiness. Given that the brain is the most oxygen-demanding organ in our body, accounting for over 20% of our oxygen consumption despite its small size, intentional breathing can also enhance focus and cognitive performance.
