Mercedes-Benz has done the right thing with its update of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, its class-leading exotic coupe. It has refused to mess with a winning formula. Although the 2020 AMG GT two-door sports car isn't completely new, it receives several of the company's most modern and attractive features. Also joining the lineup is the hardcore, racetrack-inspired 2020 AMG GT R Pro, a new trim level that offers an upgraded suspension and other mechanical changes, along with unique exterior trim. Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr gets a closer look at the GT R Pro during its debut at the L.A. Auto Show.
Q: How much does the AMG GT cost?
A: The current AMG GT starts at $112,000 at the base trim level. Upgrade your equipment levels and you can be looking at a starting price of $157,000. Mercedes hasn't given pricing for the new 2020 AMG GT or the AMG GT R Pro yet, but we expect the numbers will get just a bit bigger. With a long list of available options, you'd have no problem nudging up against $200K.
Q: How much power does it have?
A: Just like the current AMG GT, the 2020 model has three different horsepower ratings, all from the same turbocharged V8 engine. The base model gets 469 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The midlevel AMG C is rated at 550 hp and 502 lb-ft. The topped-out R and R Pro are rated at 577 hp and 516 lb-ft.
Q: How quick is it?
A: During Edmunds testing, the 2018 AMG GT (and an AMG GT R) went from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The AMG GT R was able to cover the quarter-mile in just 11.2 seconds at over 130 mph. We expect the new model to return similar times.
Q: When can I buy one?
A: Mercedes-Benz hasn't released on-sale data yet for the AMG GT, but since it's a 2020 model, we expect it to go on sale later in 2019.
