This week, the FAA released information on how to renew your Part 107 Remote Pilot certificate during the testing center lockdown.
Note that this SFAR only applies to recency of knowledge that lapses between April 1, 2020 and
June 30, 2020 so be sure to check your written exams!
The FAA also released this FAQ document that contains more information: [ Ссылка ]
Remote Pilot certificates don’t expire but… you need to take a recurrent exam every 24 calendar months.
With the testing centers closed since March, many have been stuck not being able to take their recurrent exam.
This means: you can’t fly as a Remote Pilot until you pass the recurrent exam…
We’ve been waiting for the FAA to come up with a solution and it’s here!
How to renew
While most people get their 107 by passing the FAA written exam (and renewing it by passing the recurrent exam), there’s always been a separate process in place for Part 61 pilots to receive a Part 107 certificate and to renew it.
The process is an online test that gives you immediate results.
Exceptionally, the FAA will allow non-Part 61 to renew by taking the initial or renewal exam online.
Who qualifies
If you took your last FAA Remote Pilot written exam (UAG or UGR) on April 30th, 2018 or before, you are now out of currency and need to renew.
If you took your exam anytime in May 2018, you will have to renew by May 31st 2020 to remain current.
How long is it good for?
Your “online” recency will be good for 6 calendar months.
After that you have to take the recurrent exam at a testing center.
Example Timeline
You took your test in March 2018.
You couldn’t renew in March 2020, and now it’s May.
You take the course online on May 12th, 2020, you are now current until October 31st! After that you will need to take the recurrent exam at a testing center.
How to access?
Go to [ Ссылка ] and register.
Search “Part 107” in the search bar
Select either
Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (small UAS) Initial - Introduction ([ Ссылка ])
Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (small UAS) Recurrent - Introduction ([ Ссылка ])
Review the intro page, then click on the green number 1 at the top or bottom of the screen, then the now-blue number 2 and finally the blue Review button.
The Exam page will then become available.
About the Exam
The exam is 35 questions.
You must complete the entire exam in one session. If the exam is not completed and graded in 90 minutes or less, you will need to retake the entire exam when you log into the course again.
You may review course material as you take the test. Many questions have references links available. (A separate window will open. Close that window when ready to continue with this exam.)
When complete, press the "Grade Exam" button at the bottom.
If you get wrong answers you will be brought back to the exam with the incorrect answers marked (see video).
You will NOT have to retake the entire exam, just correct the incorrect questions and resubmit.
You must get 100% to pass the exam.
Who this is NOT for…
This is NOT for initial testing. NO, you cannot take the initial test online to get your initial certification.
You will have to wait for the tests to reopen.
