In groups of 4, create a profile of a person, group, or event. This may involve the “talking head” interview, where you gather the story from a person or persons and fill in the telling of the story with b-roll sequences. Or it may be something more “direct” or verité style.
We will brainstorm ideas in class, but you should keep your eyes and ears open for things that make you curious about British culture or lifestyle. Some thoughts off the top of my head:
Skateboarders at Southbank
Cockney rhyming slang
History of a pub
An updated Housing Problems about affordable middle-class housing
The personal lives of palace guards
The story of a neighborhood London cinema
The life of a busking musician
The Columbia road flower market
Participatory documentaries explore story through interaction with the social actors—through talking through a conversation. Ideas for b-roll can be generated from the conversation or you may shoot b-roll first and ask questions around that b-roll later. Again, think in terms of sequences while shooting.
