La Chimera
In the early seventeenth century, few chamber works portrayed lamenting male characters. However, Sigismondo d'India's three laments—Orpheus (1621), Apollo (1621), and Jason (1623)—are remarkable examples of expressive tenor vocal settings.
Orpheus' lament centers on his sorrow over losing Eurydice once again. The text vividly describes her sudden disappearance and the tragic circumstances of her death.
D'India's highly expressive style is evident in the lament through its abrupt mood shifts, wide leaps, chromatic motion, gradually ascending pitches, rapid monotonal declamation, and unexpected rests. The continuo accompaniment complements the vocal part with unconventional harmonic progressions, chromatic lines, and dissonant elements.
