He began his military service (1963) Navy Seal. In 1969 he was awarded Israel's highest honor, Medal of Valor (1969) for combat near Suez. During Operation Bulmus 6 he was hit by a bullet, but kept on fighting, and then was hit by two separate grenades and continued the assault.
In 1979, he became Shayetet 13’s commander (Israel’s Navy Seals unit) earning the Chief of General Staff’s Citation for leading operations against terrorist cells in Lebanon.
In 1992, Admiral Ami Ayalon became the Chief of the Navy, and he built up Israel’s strategic Dolphin submarine fleet.
Having stepped down as head of the Navy in 1996, Ami was again called upon to serve, this time as Director of the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Service). He is credited with rehabilitating the service, which had been demoralized by the assassination, a year earlier, of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
Ami was raised on a kibbutz. He graduated from Harvard University, and the U.S. Naval War College.
Ami serves as the Chairman of the Board of AKIM Israel, the national organization for Self-Advocacy of People with Intellectual Disabilities and their families. AKIM Israel's main mission is to make the Israeli society a respecting, warm and accepting society that facilitates self-realization, in acknowledgment of difference and in commitment to equal opportunities. Ami believes that an inclusive society is a strong society.
