The DA's Doctor Mpho Phalatse is the new Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
She won with 144 votes, while the ANC's Mpho Moerane got 121.
Her election comes after the swearing-in of 270 councillors and the appointment of the Speaker, the DA's Vasco Da Gama.
Doctor Phalatse says her first priority is to ensure that various political parties in council put aside their differences and deliver services to all residents of Johannesburg.
She says her election shows that the country's democracy has matured given the fact that she was elected without a coalition government.
