Following the announcement of the closure of the Meyer Burger (Germany) and Systovi (France) plants, the future of the European photovoltaic industry is in question.
The European Commission is supporting the redeployment of the European photovoltaic industry with the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA), which calls for the production of 30 GW of solar panels by 2030, with new rules to speed up the authorization of new plants.
In France, major contractors have been asked to commit to a “Solar Pact”. The aim is to produce 40% of the photovoltaic panels used in France by 2030.
How feasible is such reindustrialization in the face of competition from Asia? What are the technological and financial challenges involved? How can Europe rise to the challenge?
