This video will compare real life mpg tests for two types of driving of the Mazda MX-5 ND 1.5l engine, firstly nursing it, trying to keep revs between 1k-2k rpm and then driving the mx5 ND as it should be drive, basically extending the rev range further before changing up a gear. I guess you could say what is the extra cost for a bit of fun?
So firstly driving around for a week nursing the throttle my average miledge as shown on the trip computer was exactly 50 mpg. A mixture of town and motorway driving. To get a more accurate figure if we calculate miles driven divided by the litres used from fill to fill we get a figure of 49.5mpg.
For the second test, covering a similar distance over similar roads, the trip computer showed 46.5mpg, but the more accurate calculation comes out as 47.0 mpg interestingly this time MORE generous than the trip meter. So hardly any difference between the two.
Considering the distances were almost the same the difference is cost for having fun was just over £3 a week - basically the price of a cup of coffee.
