(4 Jan 2017) Argentine Falkland War veterans marched on Tuesday at the iconic Plaza de Mayo square in Buenos Aires to demand the government to stop any possible agreement with Great Britain regarding the Falkland Islands.
The event marks the 184 anniversary of the Falkland Islands reassertion under British rule back in 1833, which is considered by Argentina as an illegal occupation.
Argentina and the UK Foreign Ministries jointly launched a policy paper on September 14th 2016, in which they agreed to "set up a dialogue to improve cooperation on South Atlantic issues of mutual interest" and "take the appropriate measures to remove all obstacles limiting the economic growth and sustainable development of the Falkland Islands, including in trade, fishing, shipping and hydrocarbons."
Veterans denounced that the policy paper involves surrendering part of the historic national sovereignty claims.
Among the agreements reached between Argentina and Great Britain include identifying the remains of 123 Argentine soldiers buried in a Falklands Island cemetery after their 1982 war.
In April 1982, Argentine forces invaded the islands, which have been controlled by Britain since 1833.
Britain retook the Falklands after a brief war in which 255 British troops, 649 Argentines and three islanders died.
