The UK government has agreed to adopt features of the EU Commissions Circular Economy Package, including meeting a 65% municipal recycling target by 2035. To help meet this target, the UK needs to maximise its recycling contribution from commercial sources.
Commercial waste zoning could be one way to help achieve this, where a single waste management company is licenced to operate in a set geographical zone. This could potentially increase recycling rates, while also lowering costs and reducing air pollution.
Optrak worked with WRAP to model current waste collections (i.e. numerous waste providers) in 4 English urban city zones, along with hypothetical scenarios, where all businesses are serviced by one single waste provider. The purpose of this was to understand local council requirements and how they and commercial waste collection services could work to meet those targets whilst minimising the environmental impacts of the services.
