Known to the West as the Whirling Dervishes, members of the Mevlevi Order perform the mesmerising Islamic rite. This ritual of spirituality has made the group internationally famous, yet the tradition is forbidden under the Turkish constitution.
"We love the whirl, it is worship for us" states one woman. However, other Turkish Muslims frown upon women whirling in this public display of belief. Tensions between Islam and secularism in Turkey is reflected in this age old local ceremony and frictions have erupted between the Turkish Government and other Turkish Muslims.
