St Joseph's College open in 1883 as a Roman Catholic seminary. By the 1960s numbers of pupils declined. In 1986 there where only 82 students left with most attending classes at St John Rigby College in nearby Orrell. The last students left St Joseph's in 1992. In 1996 Archbishop of Liverpool decided to sell St Joseph's to a property developer who had plans to covert the Grade 2 listed buildings into 92 apartments, with 220 new build "enabling" units but the plan never come into fruition. The building has been left to decay ever since.
