South Africa's Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba says the government is doing everything in its power to quell the recent wave of xenophobic attacks. The tensions, he says, are as a result friction between local citizens and foreign nationals over a range of issues. South Africans in the communities where attacks have been recorded cite the competition for jobs and alleged involvement of illegal immigrants in crime as reasons. The home affairs department is now planning to crack down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. So far, more than 33-thousand people were deported in the 2015/2016 financial year. Gigaba will on Friday meet with AU ambassadors, who have voiced concerns over the wave of xenophobic violence
