Balat is located on the European side of Istanbul, in the old city on the historic peninsula, on the western bank of the Golden Horn.

Balat is a down-to-earth neighborhood of narrow cobbled streets and colorful houses, where hip cafes and cutting-edge galleries sit next to old-school neighborhood grocers.

Buildings like the Greek Ecumenical Patriarchate basilica, synagogues, and Byzantine churches attest to the area's cosmopolitan past as a center for Jewish, Greek, and Armenian communities.

This neighborhood of Istanbul was once known as the Jewish quarter of the city. Today you can still find many synagogues here, as well as a more diverse group of residents.

There is much speculation about the origin of the name Balat, but it is possible that the word is derived from the Greek word palation meaning palace; Because Balat neighborhood was located near Blasharneh Palace. Balat neighborhood is sometimes written in other forms such as Balat. When you enter this neighborhood, it is as if you have traveled to the heart of history and decades ago.

The Colorful Houses

Let’s face it, it is the main reason why most people want to visit Balat. The beauty of Balat is unpretentious which is something that is hard to find in other popular destinations. Despite the fact that most of these colorful buildings could use a renovation, in a way that imperfection makes them even more attractive.
