Here are 5 tips how to retain your erectile function into old age! Dr. med. Dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, a board-certified urologist and sexologist from Göttingen, gives you valuable advice that you can do in your everyday life. Highlighting data from the Massachusetts Male Aging study, Buntrock notes that 40% of men experience erectile difficulties at age 40, increasing to 70% at age 70. These issues include problems in developing or maintaining a satisfactory erection for sexual activity, rather than complete erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Buntrock offers five essential tips for preserving erectile health. The first tip emphasizes the importance of nighttime and morning erections for proper erectile function. He advises 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night, avoiding alcohol and caffeine before bed, and addressing sleep apnea and frequent urination issues.
The second tip discusses testosterone and late-onset hypogonadism in men over 50. Dr. Dr. Buntrock explains that low testosterone, defined as below 8 nmol/l, can cause structural changes in the penis, leading to venous leaks. He suggests testosterone replacement therapy to maintain levels between 12 to 15 nmol/l and notes that weight loss can help increase testosterone in overweight individuals.
Monitoring blood pressure is the third tip, as hypertension significantly impacts erectile function. The fourth advice is to quit smoking, as it often leads to erectile dysfunction.
Lastly, Dr Buntrock advises careful dietary choices, recommending a diet rich in vegetables, legumes, and fish over meat and processed foods. He explains that general inflammation, which worsens with age and poor diet, blocks the release of nitric oxide, essential for erection.
