Why does my car roll when I put it in Park? Welcome to Mercie J auto care, where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I'm Rick Smith, master certified technician. I'm going to try to answer that question for you today and I’m assuming that the question is why does my car roll just a little bit, not keep rolling.
Some cars are a little bit more extreme than others but basically what you have when you put your car in park, inside the transmission is a part called the parking pawl. That engages in to a gear that’s on the drive on the transmission. So sometimes if the parking pawl lands on one of the tooth of the gear, then your car rolls a little bit so that locks in and stops it from moving.
So it depends on whether it’s immediately in there and just rocks back-and-forth a little bit or it has to roll to engage is why the car moves just a little bit when you put it in park. Parking pawl into a parking gear. So I hope that answers your question and until next time, safe travels and blessings to you.
