I handmade this book by digitally sketching my favorite Van Gogh pieces. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it!
This piece is called Empress Elizabeth of Austria by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Elizabeth, also known an Sisi, lived a complicated life. She married the emperor of Austria at the age of 15. During her time as empress, she was idolized publicly, but in reality, she was a miserable woman struggling to survive. She hated the stuffy Viennese court that contrasted with her free-spirited upbringing. She had an overpowering mother-in-law in Archduchess Sophie, who refused to let her parent all but one of her children. Elizabeth lost control over so many parts of her life, but since she could control her appearance and weight, she funneled all of her energy into it. She spent hours everyday brushing and styling her hair and exercising. She took corset tightlacing to a whole new level. Nowadays, Elisabeth is seen as a modern-day woman, a person who was ahead of her time. What do you think? Thanks for watching!
