Hello hello! Today we're exploring the history of Veliky Novgorod, once one of the most important trading spots in Europe. Its position near the rivers that connect the Baltic in the North with the Black and Caspian Sea in the South allowed it to prosper during the Middle Ages. Under the Varengian ruler Rurik, it played an important role in the foundation of the Kievan Rus, and later it hosted the Eastern kontor of the Hanseatic League.

The book is called Groß-Novgorod, Aufstieg und Fall einer russischen Stadtrepublik, by Konrad Onasch. I'm not aware of an English translation.
