Joe Frearson from Dargaville. My business is called Good Built Homes and Construction Limited. We're all about customer service, family, and anything building related.
I've done everything. Non stop. It was 4. 30am in the morning. I'd get up, I'd do my paperwork. It was 7 o'clock. I'll get the boys started. I'll go and work all day. And I'll knock off about 4.30. Come into the office and I'll be about 6.30, 7 o'clock at night. And then I'll go home, do my kid thing, and do a little bit more at home.
Because I was on the tools, I didn't have everything planned out, so my night time was getting my next days ready. That was my role for about a year. I can be a workaholic, so it was the norm for me. Starting a business I had that energy to do it, but no one can do that 24/7. I couldn't.
What did the Business Success Programme provide to you and your business?
Putting systems in place, processes in place, looking after my finances, looking after my time management all these things. It took time for me to understand it, but once I got there it just starts to make sense. And by the end of it is like everything starts to flow. Whether it be my workers becoming more independent, which frees up my time, and then I can look after my finances and my time scheduling.
All of that helped me build my business, and now I can start to work on other areas in my business.
What is happening now?
Coming on board with Oxygen8, I only had three guys. And then within the year and a half, two years working with Susan from Oxygen8, I am now sitting with 11 guys. I've got an admin person. My revenue doubled in the first year, and it's looking like it'll go up again by another 25%. And that just keeps working, because I keep following the systems, I keep following the processes, and it proves that that works.
What has working with Oxygen8 meat to you personally?
I now don't have to work on the weekends. I don't have to, sometimes I do anyway. So that's freed me up to spend time with my family and my kids. I get to offer more people opportunities that they'll never get before. So I've got a lot of my family members and friends working in my business. And I know just hiring more people supports more families.
It's not just my 11 guys I have. It’s 66 people, cause everyone's got a family. So that's the most important thing for me.
What would you say to a business owner considering joining the programme?
Go and do it. If you have a little business and you want to expand a little bit, just go and do it. It's a no brainer. It was the best move that I had done for my business.
