Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has chosen Russia for his first foreign visit since the attempted coup last month. The relations between the two countries were badly damaged after Turkey shot down a Russian military jet over the Syrian border in November. But nine months later, the bitter war of words has stopped and both countries appear to be on the road to reconcialition. Vladimir Putin was one of the first foreign leaders to call President Erdogan immediately after the July 15th failed coup. A welcome show of support, in contrast to certain western leaders who've instead proven critical of Erdogan's post-coup response. But while it should be easy for Ankara and Moscow to restore their economic ties, it might be more difficult to find a common stance on Syria -- as they continue to back opposite sides.
