Fort Drum, also known as the "Concrete Battleship," is a fortified island strategically located at the entrance of Manila Bay in the Philippines. Acquired by the United States after the Spanish–American War, it was transformed into a military stronghold as part of the Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bays. The fort, resembling a battleship from a distance, featured a 20-foot thick steel-reinforced concrete deck armed with powerful guns.
In World War II, Fort Drum played a crucial role in defending against Japanese forces, becoming the first American battery to open fire on the invaders. However, it eventually fell to Japanese control after the Fall of Corregidor in 1942. The fort stood as the final Japanese stronghold in Manila Bay until the U.S. offensive in 1945. US forces, after intense bombardment, gained control by pumping a gasoline mixture into the fort and using explosives to ignite incendiary grenades, resulting in a fiery explosion.
Post-war, Fort Drum was decommissioned and abandoned. In 2001, the Philippine Coast Guard repurposed it, fitting an automated light on the top deck to guide ships safely entering Manila Bay.
