Chapter 8 from the Book “History of Western Philosophy” by Bertrand Russell 1945.
History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell was first published in 1946. It was the best-selling philosophy book of the twentieth century.
In the preface, Russell outlines his purpose for the book, namely to show that philosophy is part of the foundations and fabric of political and social life. Since philosophical discussions cannot be isolated from their historical context,Russell intends to navigate through Western philosophy by examining his philosophy itself against its historical context.
Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950, and this book was named as one of the books that won him the award. A History of Western Philosophy’s success gave Russell financial security for the last part of his life.
