Magazzino Italian Art in collaboration with Ilisso present a film overviewing the life and practice of Sardinian artist Costantino Nivola, focusing on his unique process of sandcast sculpting. Directed by Enrico Pinna and Andrea Mura, and edited by Domenico Palma, The Sandman, is released on the occasion of Magazzino Italian Art’s upcoming exhibition Nivola: Sandscapes. Featuring a selection of approximately 50 works from the early 1950s to the 1970s, including sandcast reliefs, carved concrete sculptures, and rarely seen maquettes of his most important architectural commissions, this focused exhibition will examine the artistic process, range of influences, and notable impact that Nivola had on modern urban architecture and design.
The film traces Nivola’s early career, from his arrival to New York in 1939, to the creation of his pioneering process of sandcast sculpting and the development of his mature large-scale works that are the focus of the exhibition at Magazzino this spring. Produced by Ilisso and Magazzino Italian Art Foundation with the collaboration of the Costantino Nivola Foundation and sponsorship of the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C., The Sandman provides further insight into the remarkable career of Costantino Nivola.
