STORYLINE:
Czech fans in the German city of Gelsenkirchen celebrated early on Monday as the Czech Republic scored twice to earn a 2-0 halftime lead over the United States in Group E of the World Cup.
A large crowd of US and Czech fans gathered to watch the game on a giant screen in a public viewing area at the former Schalke stadium, located near the new arena where the match was being played.
Jan Koller and Tomas Rosicky scored for Czech Republic.
Koller, the tall striker who plays for Borussia Dortmund, headed in the first goal in the fifth minute off a cross from Zdenek Grygera.
In the 36th, Rosicky sent a hard shot from 30 metres (yards) into the left side of the net past goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
US fans groaned in the 29th minute as captain Claudio Reyna's 25-metre (yard) shot hit the post.
Koller was taken off the field on a stretcher in the 43rd minute and Vratislav Lokvenc came on to replace him.
Italy and Ghana, who play later Monday, are also in Group E.
