The story of the Gray Man Ghost starts long ago in Pawleys Island. A chilling legend that has been around for centuries. It began with a sighting during the catastrophic 1822 hurricane in South Carolina. The most recounted version, however, dates back to 1865, near the end of the Civil War.
A Confederate officer exchanged love letters with a woman living on Pawleys Island. They eagerly awaited their reunion after the war's end. Unfortunately, as he journeyed back, he met a tragic fate in a treacherous creek, watched by his former slave.
Meanwhile, the officer's fiancée stood on a dune, watching a storm approach. To her astonishment, she spotted her beloved on foot, nearing her. However, as she reached out to him, he vanished. She claimed he had pointed towards the mainland.
Believing this was a warning, her family evacuated, and their house survived the ensuing hurricane's wrath. Since then, the Gray Man has been seen before storms, his presence hinting at imminent danger. Those who heed his warning may escape unscathed.
