During plasma cutting the work piece melts during cutting, as compared to oxy-fuel cutting which burns the material. The plasma exists between an electrode in the torch and an electrically conducting work piece; this means that when the arc is ignited, the gas flowing through the nozzle orifice is ionized. The temperature of the plasma itself melts the work piece and ejects it with high Kinetic energy out of the cutting kerf. The plasma cutting process is suitable for high quality and severance cutting of all electrically conducting metals.
