In this episode of our TTS reading of The Mysterium coniunctionis, Jung discusses the philosophical significance of the story of our ''first parents" Adam and Eve. This pair forms the basis of the alchemical conjunction and many other philosophical traditions especially those pertaining to the creation of the philosopher's Stone (as well as the hermaphroditic homunculus, the philosophic egg, the royal advantage etc. )

We don't need to go too far to realise that Adam and Eve correspond to Rex and Regina, however the derivation of Eve from Adam aligns most closely to the alchemical concept of the ubiquity of the Arcane substance which is Adam. Therefore the Arcane substance, a Rebis can be divided into variants which can then be combined to gain a multiplicative effect.

This division causes a separation which creates tension between the opposites. The enmity between the pair not only make gradient backed processes possible (All psychic, metaphysical, & physical processes rely on potentiality) but also engenders chaos which is a continual state of dis-unity.

To redeem the opposite therefore a perfect union between the poles is imposed, then the product of this union brings it's forbearers to unity like a waterfall joins the above with the below.

The alchemists' gradual reduction of chaos to order is a repetition of the creation of Adam. The prima-material is treated through different operations to extract only it's incorruptible parts. This unit is then enriched through magical influences to generate a simulacrum of the first man. Accordingly when all conditions are right, and the adept has attained the highest degree wisdom, the miracle of generation of species distinct from the previous can be effected at will. This is one of the secret goals of alchemy i.e. the reanimation of vegetable matter through transmutation by a vehicle.
