Brick is one of the most common and oldest building materials used to construct walls, foundations, and even homes. Despite its prevalence, brick can be at risk of cracking over time due to weather changes or ground movement.
Continuous exposure to extreme temperatures can cause the brick's mortar to contract and crack, which can require significant patching if not replaced altogether.
If built on unstable soil or near an unexplainable sinkhole, there is an increased risk for brick structures to become cracked due to excessive and insistent ground movement.
Thankfully, builders of today are able to utilize modern technology that was unavailable in antiquity through sophisticated measuring techniques that allow them to properly survey the land before construction begins.
Repairing cracks in bricks due to movement is a tricky task, but with the right tools and knowledge, it can be done.
Here are a few simple steps, following which your cracked bricks can look as good as new!
• First, clean the area around the crack to ensure all dirt and debris are removed so the repair will last.
• Afterward, mix a latex concrete patch compound to fill in the crack completely, working it into the brick.
• Let it dry for two days, then use an angle grinder to cut back any of the surface material that may have bulged over the edges of the surrounding brick.
• Sandpaper and steel wool can be used to finish smoothing out any bumps around the new patch, which will help provide an even appearance when finished.
And that's all about fixing cracks in an old brick wall.
