Salto del Pastor canario, or shepherd's leap in English, is a technique used since before colonial times to travel fast and safe across rugged and difficult terrain. Salto del Pastor is a very useful way of transportation in terrains like the one in La Gomera, with steep cliffs and deep valleys.
Salto del Pastor was used by the shepherds to walk across these ravines with their animals and it was passed from generation to generation.
Nowadays the shepherds don't need to follow their animals around anymore so one might wonder if the shepherd's leap is still practiced nowadays. I met with one teacher of Salto del pastor in La Gomera to learn about the history of this tradition and if it survived modern times and how.
