The Xperia Z5 Premium is one of three new devices in the company's latest flagship smartphone line, revealed this week at IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin
STORY-LINE:
With hopes of grabbing a bigger slice of the global smartphone market, Sony has revealed big improvements for the latest version of the Xperia range - the Z5.
The new model boasts a 23 megapixel camera with an upgraded image sensor, there's also five-times zoom and lightning-fast autofocus in just 0.03 seconds.
It also comes with improved motion stabilisation for videos.
"What we have announced today is the next generation of smartphones the Z5 smartphone series. The Xperia Z5 series, starting with the Xperia Z5 here," says Sony senior manager, Jun Makino.
"And with the Xperia Z5 series, what we have done is to bring in the next generation Sony camera technology. Enabling you basically to capture fleeting moments in the fastest way possible, really bringing the world's best camera in a smartphone in collaboration with our image sensor team, bringing a brand new image sensor, plus digital imaging technology coming from the Alpha Group to really bring the world's best camera and then the world's fastest auto-focus, so you'll never miss those split-second moments."
The Xperia Z5 is Sony's new premium flagship phone and is made from metal and glass, it also claims to be waterproof.
The company also promises better battery life, up to two days usage on a single charge.
The phone comes in three different sizes.
There's the pocket-friendly Z5 Compact with a 4.6 inch screen, a larger 5.2 inch Xperia Z5, then the 5.5 inch Z5 Premium which boasts a 4K Ultra HD screen, optimised for entertainment viewing.
It's also equipped with up-scaling technology, which claims to enhance non-4K photos and videos to a 4K resolution.
"So, the Xperia Z5 series comes in a range of three sizes - the Xperia Z5, the Xperia Z5 Compact and also the Xperia Z5 Premium," says Jun Makino.
"And this is the Xperia Z5 Premium, coming with the world's first 4K smartphone, a 5.5 inch, 4K Ultra HD display so brings that really, really crisp and the best viewing experience you can get in a smartphone."
"What we kind of see, more in the Asian region, we see a lot of tendency to prefer a larger screen device. In the train, everywhere, they're consuming media. And for that they really want to have the best, the biggest screen.
"And for those consumers we have the Xperia Z5 Premium which gives you that best viewing experience on a 4K screen. And actually what you can do with the Z5 Premium is any kind of streaming content whether it be full HD or HD quality, we will upscale it to a 4K quality, so you get the best viewing experience you can imagine."
Sony has also added a fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone, rather than on the screen.
Tech expert Andrew Laughlin is impressed by the Z5's premium, top-end design, but believes there's still some way to go before it rivals smartphone giants like Samsung and Apple.
"We all knew it was coming, it's Sony's new flagship smartphone. I think it's an interesting product, very premium, very top end, nice frosted glass back, machined edges - they're going for that iPhone market, you know the top end smartphones, premium smartphones," he says.
"It looks interesting, there's a lot of competition out there, it maybe didn't blow me away, but it wasn't awful."
Sony's devices are on display to the public at IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin which runs from September 4 - 9.
