The Caspian Sea, despite its deceptive name, is actually a lake because it is completely landlocked; it is the largest lake or body of water in the world. It is calculated that during the 21st century, the water level of the Caspian Sea will decrease by 9–18 m (30–60 ft) due to the acceleration of evaporation due to global warming and the process of desertification, causing an ecocide. The Caspian Sea is facing an ecological catastrophe, on the border of Europe and Asia its water levels have fallen into an accelerating plummet which may see the water level fall by op to 20 meters by 2100.
