(24 Nov 2021) Rome's taxi drivers joined in a nationwide strike on Wednesday calling for a new bill, which would deregulate ride sharing services, to be scrapped.
The workers demonstrated from the Italian capital's Piazza Esedra and marched to Piazza Venezia as they chanted slogans and held banners, signs and flares.
The drivers are against the proposal which they claim would harm small independent businesses and benefit multinational companies.
Union representative Riccardo Cacchione attended the demonstration and told the Associated Press that the legislation was "unacceptable."
He said that he feared the law could "lead to the creation of a (free) market for an essential public service."
