Today I am in Rocky Mount, North Carolina facilitating a full day workshop for the Northeast Leadership Academy, a College of Education program at North Carolina State University. The Northeast Leadership Academy is focused on preparing educators to lead in rural, high poverty schools.
The goal of our workshop, called “Rethinking the Flipped Classroom” is to help prepare these future-ready leaders by modeling efficient, active, engaging & scalable methods of instruction that can be implemented in any classroom to enhance the learning experience for all students.
A flipped classroom, the reverse of a traditional one, is all about minimizing the amount of time we are spending on content delivery so we can maximize time spent on challenging students to be active, while they collaborate, communicate, create & reflect on their learning.
This can be accomplished by encouraging teachers to record & share 1-take videos that capture lesson & lecture content. Teacher-created video lectures are more effective for delivering content to students and can be 60-80% shorter than live lectures, freeing up a significant amount of class time.
Throughout the day, a number of flipped lessons are modeled so participants can experience the teaching method from the student perspective, while also having time to collaborate with their peers, discussing how the flipped strategies can work back in their schools and classrooms.
The video lectures create a highly efficient learning environment so that most of the lesson time can be spent on getting students up and moving , activating the brain, while being fully engaged in the content.
At the end of the workshop, we connect with Dr. Brandy Parker, an award-winning corporate analyst from Johnson & Johnson. She talks about her experiences using these flipped classroom strategies to increase efficiency, improve communication and enhance training in the workplace. She also answers questions about why these skills are important for students who will eventually be entering the workforce.
The final challenge is for each group of participants to create a one take paperslide video that re-teaches the lessons from the workshop - I ask them to teach back to me what I have been attempting to teach them - this is the best way for me to know if they learned what I wanted them to learn. Groups create their #paperslide lessons, practice by teaching each other, and then record & reflect on their final products.
These scalable flipped classroom strategies can be used by any educator to create efficient & active learning environments that meet the needs of all students.
