Spiral lacing is typically how you will lace up arming clothes that go under maille and/or steel armour. A friend was having trouble visualizing it, so I made this video. There are two reasons to use several short laces instead of one long one: it's quicker to undo and redo just one section that way, and also it lets you lace different sections more loosely or tightly. The waist should always be as tight as you can get it, for proper armour support if this is going under steel.
