Erdene Zuu Khiid is the first monastery in Mongolia. Built in the 16th-century, Chinggis Khaan established a supply base here to support his westward expansion. His son Ogedel ordered the construction of a proper capital. This attracted traders, dignitaries and skilled workers from across Asia and even Europe. However, the ruins are scant.
