BMW iX Review: Electrifying Luxury with a Bold Face
The BMW iX represents the Bavarian automaker's vision for the future of electric luxury SUVs. This striking vehicle combines cutting-edge technology, impressive performance, and a controversial design that's sure to turn heads wherever it goes.
Powertrain and Performance
The iX is available in three flavors: the entry-level xDrive40 (326 hp), the more powerful xDrive50 (523 hp), and the range-topping M60 (619 hp). All variants feature dual-motor all-wheel drive setups, providing excellent traction and acceleration. The M60 can sprint from 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds, rivaling many sports cars.
Range and Charging
BMW offers two battery options: a 74 kWh pack in the xDrive40 and a larger 108 kWh unit in the xDrive50 and M60 models. The xDrive40 delivers up to 264 miles of range, while the xDrive50 extends that to an impressive 383 miles. Charging capabilities are equally impressive, with DC fast charging allowing a 10-80% charge in less than 40 minutes.
Ride and Handling
Despite its considerable size and weight, the iX manages to deliver a surprisingly agile driving experience. The low center of gravity, thanks to the battery placement, helps minimize body roll. The xDrive50 and M60 models benefit from standard air suspension, providing a magic carpet-like ride quality that soaks up road imperfections with ease.
Interior and Technology
Step inside the iX, and you're greeted by a thoroughly modern and luxurious cabin. The centerpiece is BMW's curved display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a massive 14.9-inch infotainment screen. The latest iDrive system is intuitive and responsive, offering both touch and rotary controller inputs.
Material quality is top-notch throughout, with BMW incorporating sustainable elements like olive leaf-tanned leather and recycled plastics. The absence of a center tunnel results in a spacious, open feel for both front and rear passengers.
Practicality
While the iX offers generous passenger space, its 500-liter cargo capacity falls short of some competitors. However, folding the rear seats expands the space to a cavernous 1,750 liters. The lack of a frunk (front trunk) is a minor disappointment in this segment.
Design
There's no avoiding it – the iX's exterior design is polarizing. The massive kidney grille (which houses sensors rather than being functional) and squinty headlights create a face that's bound to spark debate. The overall shape is sleek and aerodynamic, but it's the details that will divide opinion.
Pricing and Value
Starting at around £70,000 for the xDrive40, the iX isn't cheap. However, it offers a level of technology, luxury, and performance that justifies its premium positioning. The xDrive50, starting at £105,000, represents a significant jump but brings additional power and range.
The BMW iX is a technological tour de force that showcases the brand's commitment to an electric future. While its design may not be to everyone's taste, there's no denying the impressive capabilities of this luxury electric SUV. With its blend of performance, comfort, and cutting-edge features, the iX is a compelling option for those looking to make a bold statement in the premium EV market.
