The salem Express struck the Haydman reef just after midnight on the 17 December 1991 whilst on it's way back from Jeddah to it home port of Safaga Egypt. On board were (according to the official manifest) about 690 passengers and crew, but it was quite usual for the ship to carry twice this amount . there were only 180 survivors. The 100 meter wreck of the Salem Express now lies at the depth of 15 to 32 meters, the sea bed is still littered with personal possessions.
