"This attack is a reminder that we are at war with extremists, who will murder innocent people to achieve their ideological objectives. One objectives of these extremists is that they kill, is to try and cause the United States to lose our nerve, and to withdraw from regions of the world. And our message is that we want to help governments survive the extremists, we want people to live normal lives, we want mothers to be able to raise her sons and daughters in a peaceful environment so they can realise the hopes and dreams of a better world."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sean McCor
mack, US State Department spokesman:
"This is a vicious attempt to try to breach the security of our embassy in San'a. Fortunately, it did not succeed; the embassy security upgrades that we've been putting in place over the past 7, 8 years were during this attack effective in stopping attack, along with the response of the Yemeni forces as well as the response of our American embassy personnel."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sean McCormack, US State Department spokesman:
"There's a group that has claimed responsibility and we're looking into it, we're following up some suspicions that we have about this particular group. I think it's safe to say, after talking to the security personnel, that the attack bears all the hallmarks of an al-Qaida attack, where you have multiple vehicle-borne devices, along with personnel on foot, seemingly in an attempt to try to breach the perimeter and actually get inside the perimeter and again to try to inflict further damage and inflict loss of life."

STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that the attack on the US embassy in the capital of Yemen was a reminder that the United States remained "at war with extremists" while the US State Department said the attack bore "all the hallmarks of an al-Qaida attack."
Attackers armed with automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenades and at least one suicide car bomb assaulted the US embassy in San'a on Wednesday morning, killing sixteen people, including six assailants, officials said.
"This attack is a reminder that we are at war with extremists who will murder innocent people to achieve their ideological objectives," Bush said after a meeting with General David Petraeus, who this week handed over command of the Multi-National Force in Iraq to General Ray Odierno.
"One objective of these extremists is to kill, to try to cause the United States to lose our nerve and to withdraw from regions of the world," Bush said.
It was the deadliest attack on a compound that has been targeted four times in recent years by bombings, mortars and shootings.
Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, has struggled to put down al-Qaida-linked Islamic militants, often to the frustration of US counterterrorism officials.
"Our message is that we want to help governments survive the extremists," Bush said. "We want people to lead a normal life. We want mothers to be able to raise their sons and daughters in a peaceful environment so they can realise the hopes and dreams of a better world."
The United States said the attack was a failed attempt to breach the embassy compound's walls.
He said one US embassy guard from Yemen was killed, along with several Yemeni security officials.
