This year's winner in the promoting better health and avoiding disease category was for a project to reduce the impact of delayed language skills in two to three year old children at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.
A project by the Flying Start programme to screen children to identify delayed language skills is enabling more appropriate support to be delivered in nursery to help them improve.
Flying Start provides support for children in deprived communities and research showed that between 50% and 60% of children in deprived areas of Bridgend had delayed language skills and were being referred for specialist help.
However, the vast majority of these children who had delayed language skills did not have a specific disorder that required such specialist treatment.
Flying Start staff decided to screen the language skills of all children who entered their nurseries to identify those with delays and then provide support from nursery staff.
The screening aimed to provide a baseline of communication skills, provide progress analysis and identify those with specific needs who may require additional support.
The screening was initially undertaken by Flying Start Speech and Language Therapists but as numbers grew, nursery staff were also trained to help with the assessment.
Following screening, children were given either red, which means they need help, amber; which means they need some help, or green; which means they had normal language development for their age.
Screening for those in need of support was carried out twice a year to show progress and data showed that 68% of those who needed urgent help made significant improvements in their language development.
The Awards are delivered by 1000 Lives Improvement, a national improvement programme for healthcare in Wales. [ Ссылка ]
