Senior Sergeant Andrii Halka of the Rubizh Brigade's Air Defense Missile Battery of Ukraine stated that the training of captured Russian soldiers suggests they are not part of elite units. He shared the information on Espreso TV.
"The Rubizh Brigade operates in the Lyman-Kupyansk and Siversk sectors. We are holding the defensive line. Russian forces continue offensive actions, employing small infantry group tactics supported by equipment such as tanks and armored vehicles. Our FPV-drone strike teams effectively destroy this equipment on the approaches. Then, artillery and anti-tank weapons come into play," Halka noted.
According to the Senior Sergeant of the Air Defense Missile Battery of the Rubizh Brigade, the logic behind these assaults appears to be aimed at wearing down Ukrainian soldiers who are constantly stationed in the trenches. However, the tactic seems irrational, as Russian troops conduct what are essentially suicidal attacks every morning.
The sergeant also observed that the training of captured Russian servicemen indicates they are not from elite units. Their gear and equipment for assaults are minimal, typically consisting of a rifle, at most eight magazines—though more often only four—a bottle of water, and a field ration. Their orders are simply to reach positions supposedly secured by their forces and hold them. "There were instances when Russians moved nonchalantly. Our guys capture them and ask, 'Where are you going?' The answer is always the same: 'We were told these are our positions.' Assaults truly happen daily. I was surprised the first time I saw two Russian soldiers just walking across an open field toward us," Halka emphasized.
Among Russian servicemen, the practice of committing suicide on the battlefield is becoming increasingly common. When Russian soldiers are wounded or find themselves in desperate situations, evidence suggests they quickly realize that they will not receive evacuation or help from their commanders, leading to a sense of despair, hopelessness and the perception that suicide is the only viable option.
The situation is exacerbated by Russian propaganda, whichactively spreads myths that soldiers captured as prisoners of war by the Armed Forces of Ukraine are subject to torture and abuse, thus making capture appear a worse alternative to death. Suicides are often the result of bullying, psychological pressure, and a feeling of despair among Russian soldiers, especially when they are left to fend for themselves. In addition, Russian army commanders on the front lines often threaten their subordinates with severe punishment or even execution if they surrender, making matters worse.
