The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced a groundbreaking rule that paves the way for "powered lift" aircraft, marking the first new aircraft type since helicopters were approved in the 1940s. These innovative vehicles, designed for air taxi services and cargo delivery, combine the flying capabilities of airplanes with the vertical takeoff and landing features of helicopters. The FAA's regulations establish operational requirements, including safe altitudes and visibility standards, ensuring the safe integration of these aircraft into the airspace. At a recent event in Las Vegas, FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker showcased a full-size model from Joby Aviation, which aims to launch its six-rotor craft, capable of cruising at 200 MPH, next year. The new rules also include pilot training frameworks, adapting existing regulations to accommodate this emerging category of aviation technology.
