The First Battle of Ypres (1914) was a key battle of the First World War. It ended the 'Race to the Sea' and transformed the war of movement into trench warfare. The BEF (British Expeditionary Force) fought against the German armies after their invasion of Belgium. It was the start of the Ypres Salient. Parts of this battle were the Battle of Langemarck (Kindermord (massacre of the innocents)), the Battle of Gheluvelt and the Battle of Nonne Bosschen. During WW1 Adolf Hitler fought near Ypres.
