Jaggayyapet #BuddhaStupa: A Journey Through Time

The local name of Jaggayyapet buddha stupa is #DhanamBodu. About a kilometre from the town, one can immerse himself in the rich heritage.

The hill is popularly known as Dhanam Bodu (meaning Hill of wealth) on which once stood a great Stupa or Mahachaitya. Around the hillock, there are traces of monastic buildings.

During the excavations in 1818, a few carved slabs from one of the brick mounds revealed the existence of a group of ancient stupas, which has been lying there for 2,000 years.

The Archaeological excavation around the town of Jaggayyapeta has found Buddhist stupa of 200 BC. Many sculptures and scriptures of Neolithic, Megalithic and medieval periods are also found around the town.

Fourteen sculptures recovered from here (All of them either broken or mere fragments, the only exception being a standing Buddha).

The most interesting as well as important of the marbles here is a slab representing a Chakravarti. The seven jewels which surround him proclaim him to the world as a king of kings.

This standing Buddha is exceptional and is dated as early as 200 B.C. Buddhism was a practical guide for peaceful living. The code of morality is advocated by the Buddha.

Let's take pride in and some credit for our Buddhist heritage.

Our heritage is already broken. Let's protect, interpret and preserved for future generations.
