Malaysia's high court is to deliver its first verdict on former premier Najib Razak at the end of July. Najib is accused of misappropriating close to US$10 million from SRC International, a former unit of 1MDB. On the final day of oral submissions, defence lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah insisted Najib was a victim of an elaborate scam. The 66-year-old had believed the money in his account was from Arab donors. His lead counsel also claimed Najib had no knowledge of the cash transfers by fugitive businessmen Jho Low and former SRC CEO Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil. If found guilty, Najib faces up to 35 years' jail and a penalty of at least five times the bribe.
