Howard volunteered for the draft and was accepted in May of 1943. Howard was selected by the 101st Airborne division and received paratrooper training in Camp Hungerford. One of his duties was to man a .30 caliber Browning Machine Gun. In December of 1944, Howard and his division were rushed to the Ardennes and proceeded to heroically stand against the Germans. Buford and his regiment were sent to occupy Germany and Austria, where they visited Adolf Hitler’s retreat in Berchtesgaden.
