INS Kursura Submarine Museum is located at RK Beach in Vizag, This is India's 5th submarine brought from Riga, Soviet union to Mumbai travelling through various countries on it's first voyage to India led by commander Arun Auditto. INS Kursura was commisioned in 1969 eventually just before indo Pakistan war, and was so helpful during the war time as well.
INS Kursura is a Diesel electric submarine of 91 metres length with a diving depth 300 metres and a speed of 28km per hour when submerged. It can carry torpedo and mines and has 7 compartments in total. Torpedo decks and firing system were in 1st compartment. 2nd compartment is for sound sonar range analyzing with a range of about 25KM. 3rd compartment is called the nerve center from where the submarine is controlled and navigation. 4th compartment is of engine room which is noisy and will have about 42 degree temperature.
A Total of About 77 persons have travelled on this submarine that only has 2 wash basins and toilets. This Historical Submarine was Decommissioned in 27th February 2001 after 30 years of service. This submarine Museum was initially planned to be set in Chennai marina beach and was finalized to Vizag later on. The pulling of submarine to the shore was really hard using ropes and Took 18 months to reach the place. In 2002 The Submarine Museum was opened by Chandrababu Naidu from there on this place stands out to be famous tourist place in Visakhapatnam.
