Hey guys, Dan here, If you’re interested in wireless CarPlay you may have already seen ads popping up for this one and it’s called CPlay2Air. I recently purchased it to make my unit wireless and now I’m here to tell you why you shouldn’t. Let’s get into it.
Essentially this is a dongle that you plug into your existing wired CarPlay dash, and it allows you to connect your phone and use CarPlay wirelessly.
It comes in two models: One for an existing Android powered dash and another for manufacturer dashes - say if your brand new vehicle came with CarPlay factory installed.
It’s not necessarily cheap with the on sale prices at $130 USD for the android model and $176 for the factory CarPlay model.
A lot of you probably think “Oh well I’ve been using my phone wirelessly with bluetooth for years - isn’t this being the times?” And you’re partially right - but see CarPlay works by taking the operating system on your phone and porting it into your dash. So rather than throwing audio to your vehicle, you’re throwing an entire operating system to it.
So I’ve had CarPlay for a couple of years now and I’ve loved it. I wanted to make it wireless and CPlaytoAir seemed like a good route.
Upon first use I was actually pleasantly surprised. Essentially you just plug in the dongle and connect via bluetooth. If you only have one device it should load CarPlay automatically - if you have two it’ll ask you on screen which device to use.
It’ll take a second to load and then just like that CarPlay starts working.
Over my two weeks with the dongle I was reminded how convenient it was not having to plug in my phone.
But over that time I was also shown a couple of pretty signifiant issues.
UI on screen shows a hoverer state on buttons - much like it would in vehicles with a trackpad - which isn’t a deal breaker but definitely noticeable when certain buttons are highlighted.
Lag when connecting
Audio Quality: muffled and also skips quite often
Does not integrate for auto dark mode
Ultimately toward the end of using the dongle it would just freeze - not allowing me to use my touchscreen at all.
Return process:
To make matters worse the return process also wasn’t easy. Upon contacting support they said they would require a video of the error happening before they would even send me instructions for how to return the device.
After sending a video they continued to try to demonstrate examples of how I could be using the device wrong including bluetooth interference, Car wifi disruption, and accidentally being on my home network. None of which we actually the case.
After a week back and forth they let me know shipping details which included:
Shipping is at your own expense back to China,
They require a tracking number for the shipping
Upon receipt if they find that the error was not their fault there would be a $25 restocking fee for the device
Once I shipped it back I did not hear from the company for an entire month - at which point I followed up. At that point they indicated they had received the product and would issue a full refund.
I don’t think they would have even processed the refund if I didn’t remind them. Ultimately I thank CPlay2Air for allowing me to reminisce about using wireless functions in my car however there’s a lot of kinks to workout in both the device and customer service.
All in all I would advise people not to get the device. Wired CarPlay is likely the best option at this point as Wireless dongles have a lot to work out.
But let me know what you guys think. Have you purchased or thought about purchasing the Wireless CarPlay adapter? Does this discourage you from buying? Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Also remember to hit the like button on this video and as always hit that subscribe button. I’ll see you in the next one.
