What's going on everybody welcome to WordPress.com with Rudy - I am Rudy - and today we're going to learn how to make a submenu.
So if you don't know what a sub menu is, it's a handy way to kind of put categories that are related under a parent menu item. So on this blog you can see they have a parent many item called travel and then under travel there’s LA, New York, and Europe which are different locations that sort of makes sense to be under travel.
So on my blog I have two web projects that I've worked on once a game called Lucy’s Adventure and workout program calculator and I kind of want to put both of those under a web projects or web apps parent menu item to save many space on my menu and because it sort of makes sense.
So to do that we need to go to our customizer. There's a few ways to do that if you log in to WordPress.com there's going to be a customizer button in the bottom right hand corner but the best way is always to go to my sites the back end of our site and from there we can go down to customize under design.
Once we’re inside the customizer we’re going to go to menus, then primary and we can see our menu items here now if we move these around they're going to move them around in real time on the menu.
You can rearrange them with the mouse and you can also click the order but what we're going to need to do first is create an item and I'm going to go to custom links and I want to make a dead link menu item for the parent menu item named web projects. This web projects item I don't want to be clickable so I’m going to place a little hash in there and that's going to make a dead link and for the link text I'm going to put “web projects.”
I’ll go ahead and add that to the menu and then I'm done for now so I’ll click on “add items” again and what I'm going to do now is re order the item so we can see web projects is there and it doesn't have a link. Now I want these two items under web projects so I’m going to go ahead and move web projects up and move it up again and now that's done. Now I want to put these [two menu items] under here so all I need to do now is indent them. So if I indent Lucy's adventure it goes down under what projects and now if I indent the 5-3-1 Calculator it goes under web projects. So that’s done, don't forget to publish!
And once you publish we want to go back and check the site. An easy way to go back to the site is just to take that out.
We can see it's in there. Just as I intended I can't click web projects; it takes me nowhere if I click that. If I click one of these menu items it's going to go ahead and take me where I want to go.
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions in the comments!
