In this video,
we're going to discuss the best way
to get in shape for climbing Kilimanjaro.
The number one way to get into the best shape
for Kilimanjaro is by hiking.
Get out and hike.
During the week
hike in the evening
or before work.
on weekends
go out into the wilderness
or mountains.
As your climb dates approach
increase your distance,
elevation,
and pack weight.
Today we're here at Wheeler Peak
in New Mexico.
We're going to hike to the top.
It's 13,000 feet.
That's some good elevation training.
We are using Diamox today,
trying it out, just using 150 milligrams.
Make sure I don't have any adverse
effects to it.
Well, I made it to the top.
Good peak for Kilimanjaro training.
It's pretty tough these last 2,000 feet.
Well, this is a little more...
overkill, for Kilimanjaro.
Here’s the top of The Grand
in the Grand Tetons.
If you can't get out into the mountains
or into the hills,
then you should at least
try going to the gym
and do the StairMaster or Elliptical.
You can also bring a pack
with you to the gym.
I know that might be kind of weird,
but you're paying a lot of money
to climb Kilimanjaro.
You should be in the best shape
you can be.
The better shape
you're in, the less like your body
will struggle with the elevation.
If you're planning on climbing
and you're from the Midwest, don't book
your climb in January or February
because be too much snow
on the ground to train.
Using a smartwatch and apps
will help you track your miles,
elevation, and vital statistics.
So I just finished the hike.
I did bring a rain jacket with me
because, as you can see behind me,
clouds were threatening all day.
but it actually never ended up raining.
But it's good to carry a jacket with you at all times.
You're going to be doing that
on Kilimanjaro as well
because it could rain at any time.
We highly recommend
using trekking poles on the mountain,
especially on the downhill.
They can help
you stabilize as you're going down
steps and rocks.
